Nothing says summertime like a good old-fashioned county fair. Where else can you find delicious food, fun rides and games, adorable animals, crazy contests and unusual exhibits all in one place? If this sounds like a great time to you, don’t miss the San Diego County Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Taking place in June and early July, it’s one of the largest, coolest and most beautiful fairs in the country.

Eat, Drink and Be Merry

You’ll have a blast at the San Diego County Fair, whether you’re exploring every thrilling ride at the Fun Zone, testing your gaming skills or catching an evening show. There is a variety of exhilarating performances day to day, including the After Six magic show, Friday night comedy shows and nightly music events. The fair is known for its concert series, which includes tribute bands, legendary entertainers and internationally known musical artists.

If you want to eat and drink your way through the fairgrounds, you have plenty of options for meals and snacks. There is a good assortment of deep-fried deliciousness, including the bizarre but tasty fried coffee balls. During the Taste of the Fair events, you can purchase taster’s portions of your favorite foods. Be sure to stop by one of the beer gardens as well. You may also be interested in the San Diego Beer Festival or the Spirit and Cocktail Festival.

Enjoy an Authentic County Fair Experience

This fair has all the traditions you’d expect, from animals shows and races to competitive exhibits. The livestock displays are always worth a view, and it’s fun watching the cute animals compete for the coveted blue ribbon. You can also see turkeys chasing a remote-control truck in a wing-to-wing race, or you can cheer on some sweet swine as they speed around a track for cookie prizes.

Numerous motorsports events take place on the fairgrounds as well. Monster trucks, a demolition derby, an antique car race and a beach buggy competition are all on the schedule. For enthusiasts, a daily car show features hot rods, muscle cars, classics and contemporary favorites. If these don’t get your motor running, no worries, there is also a truly enchanting flower show at the fair.

Laugh With the Whole Family

The San Diego County Fair is the ideal place to spend with your children. A special area called Family Funville is devoted to family-friendly frivolity. Your little ones won’t become bored with the variety of kid-based exhibits, games, rides and entertainment. You can even enter children in special contests such as drawing, chocolate design and origami. Family contests are held throughout the grounds as well, from a baby derby to a bubble-blowing competition.

To close out the festivities, there will be a patriotic celebration on the 4th of July weekend. An opening ceremony kicks things off for the 4th, and a spectacular fireworks display takes place at night. During the day, you can enjoy a Hometown Heroes Parade, enter a Most Patriotic Costume contest, munch on delectable treats and have your mind blown by the stupefying Frog X Parachute skydiving team.
